Porsha Thelusma - BGCNH Youth of the Year
Honored by 99 Restaurant, Orange
Congratulations Porsha !

The fun has just begun for Porsha Thelusma of West Haven, recently chosen by a panel of judges as 2008 Youth of the Year for the Boys & Girls Club of New Haven. On Thursday, Porsha gathered with family, friends and members of the Club staff as she was honored by 99 Restaurant. General Manager Archie Janvrin, shown here with Porsha, presented her with an award certificate and a generous array of gifts. Later this month Porsha will spend two days at a gathering of Youth of the Year from 15 other Connecticut Clubs, all under consideration for the honor of being selected as Connecticut's 2008 Youth of the Year. The Connecticut YOY will go on to compete nationally.
99 Restaurant is partnering with Boys & Girls Clubs in a number of states, including here in Connecticut, to help raise awareness and funds for the Club's programs for kids and teenagers. The Boys & Girls Club of New Haven has been teamed up with 99 Restaurant of Orange. Given the enthusiasm shown by Archie and his staff last evening, this partnership is sure to yield good results for everyone involved ! Thank you Archie & Staff ! We look forward to working with you in the months ahead . . .

Guess what's new . . . or shall we say very, very old . . . at the Club ?
Wednesday, April 9

When Mercedes Soto, Executive Director of LEAP, came by to visit with Maureen Wolyniec, our Club's Executive Director, she brought with her a very special "something."  You see, LEAP now occupies a 92 year-old building on Jefferson Street that once housed the New Haven Boys Club. Mercedes said this "something" was found in the basement of the building. Here's a picture; can you guess what it is and how it might have been used many, many years ago ? (Remember, our Club was founded by Mrs. Eli Whitney in 1871). If you think you know what it is, e-mail your guess to kidscomefirst@bgcnewhaven.org. and we'll print it here on our website. Good Luck !   It's made of steel, is about 24" long and has the removable letters NHBC on the end . . .

Boys & Girls Club of New Haven "Youth of the Year "Porsha Theulsma and Elisha Reaves represented our Club at a March 31 legislative breakfast at the State Capitol in Hartford. There they joined teens from 15 other Connecticut Clubs and received the thanks of Governor Jodi Rell and Attorney Richard Blumental for being outstanding young people leading the way for others to follow
. Blumenthal, himself a "Club Kid" from Stamford offered all teens present his help, should they need it, as they move on through high school, into college and beyond.

Thank you Porsha and Elisha for representing our Club so well.
We are proud of you and your achievements !

The Boys & Girls Club of New Haven
Where Kids Come First  !

The Boys & Girls Club of New Haven is one of the largest youth serving organizations
in the city. Our goal is to provide every child with the essential tools needed for a

changed with the needs of our children. As the needs of our children and their families
continue to change, so will the dynamics of our programs and services.

The Boys & Girls Club of New Haven was founded by Mrs. Eli Whitney in 1871. As the
second oldest Club in the nation, we are proud of our long and successful history of offering
positive youth development programs and services. For over 130 years, the Boys & Girls
Club of New Haven has been in the forefront of providing services to young people,
     particularly those from disadvantaged circumstances.

We have been there for children and families, providing services that have enhanced the
positive growth and development of children from the New Haven community.  The
Boys & Girls Club of New Haven has been there for thousands of  New Haven's youth and
helped them to become responsible, productive, caring citizens.
